Jailbreak iOS 4 on ANY iDevice!

Posted by johnny on Wednesday Aug 4, 2010 Under Tutorials

There is a new browser based exploit out for all 3rd Generation iPod touches, iPads and iPhones. Yes even the ones that have “MC” serial numbers. Horray! Glorious Day and all that. Even better news, the jailbreak couldnt be easier!

Even iPhone 4 Users can reap the benefit of this new Jailbreak!

The jailbreak was developed by Comex, and if you have more money than you know what to do with, stop by his website, http://www.jailbreakme.com/faq.html to readup about the jailbreak itself and donate a few bucks to help the cause.

Alright, enough jibberjabber, on with the tutorial.

Before we Begin:

1. Make Sure your iPod, iPhone or iPad has a good amount of battery, and a good wireless internet connection.

2. Install the latest i OS 4 software, version 4.0.1 which is available through iTunes. Download it and update like you normally do in iTunes.

Step One:

ON YOUR DEVICE, enter this address into Safari. http://www.jailbreakme.com/

If you haven’t guess what you should do next, I’m a little worried about you… Just slide the arrow over and the jailbreak process will begin.

Step Two:

There really isn’t a step two. When the jailbreak finishes, you will now have Cydia installed on your homescreen. Just exit out of Safari, and there it is!

A few things to get you up and running tho, I recommend opening up Cydia and maybe checkout a theme (like in moment medias theme, Search for “ColorGrunge” in cydia w/o the quotes. Which will download winterboard and allow you full customization of your device :)

The Wallpaper used in this tutorial, and a bunch of other Wallpapers I’ve done can be downloaded for free at http://www.inmomentmedia.com/mobile right from your iphone or ipod touch.

Also, you can now get apps like “GVMobile” in Cydia to enable texting from your ipod, or checkout “gpSPhone” to get an amazing gameboy emulator!

Congrats on successfully jail breaking your device and enjoy Cydia and all its treasures.

4.0 Theme Tutorial

Posted by johnny on Wednesday Jul 14, 2010 Under Tutorials

Get that Dirt off your Shoulders.

Without going into to much detail, this is how you theme most of the UI and Icons for i OS 4. If you’ve done a 3.0 theme already, you probably want to update your theme, and this will help you do that. If you have never made a theme before, this guide isn’t that complicated, and should be fairly easy for anyone to pickup. Whatever brought you here, you’re probably ready to get started. Simply Download the Starter Pack and we’ll get going on those instructions:

Theme Layout

BUNDLES: The biggest difference is what goes into com.apple.springboard. There are a few new additions, such as the music controller buttons for the built in multitasking. However there are a few new exclusions also, like the wifi bars no longer go there. Also, if you have a custom battery, it STILL goes into com.apple.springboard, I just didnt include a template in the starter pack. Another interesting bundle is com.apple.mobileicons.framework. Make sure you put your icon mask and overlay in here. Also there are two bundles related to themeing the music player.

DOCK.PNG: Some people are saying their dock didnt work in the new themes or whatever. IDK whats going on there, but the png is basically the same size. The starter pack theme has a blank one, because it wanted a transparent dock. But any image you put in there will be used as the dock.

ICONS: This is still the same. Infact, you can copy your old icons folder into your new theme no problemo.

INFO.PLIST: This little file has a few changes. For instance, if you want to remove icon labels, you need to set ” opacity:0 ”

UIImages: This folder gains alot of images in 4.0. The Airport and 3G signal bars now go in this folder, along with having fancy new names. (Note even the style of airport bars (going from a increasing rectangle style to the 3 rounded airport style bars) I also put another copy of the Icon mask, overlay and shadow in this folder.

Room For Improvement:

UIImages should also get a matching set of Silver_0_WifiBar.png set of files, however, Winterboard does not apply them, even if you put them in the folder. This will likely be fixed at a later date, but for now, I was unable to apply any themes to the silver menubar.

Wallpaper: With the 3.2 on the iPad and now 4.0 on the iPhone, its becoming really hard to give the end user your wallpaper. Im currently trying to find a way to store it in their saved photos or something atleast. Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated.

iOS 4 – Jailbreak Tutorial [outdated]

Posted by johnny on Friday Jul 9, 2010 Under Tutorials

This post is outdated!! See our latest post for current jailbreak information.

http://inmomentmedia.com/blog/?p=216

Update to 4.0.1 at your own risk.

Its been a couple weeks since the newest update to the iDevice family, iOS 4 dropped. Shortly after iOS 4 debuted, a number of updates to popular jailbreak programs were released. This is a short guide explaining what method you should use, and it will also cover what is currently not working with jailbroken iOS 4 Devices.

If you just recently purchased your iPhone or iPod touch, you probably used spirit or blackra1n to jailbreak it previously. If thats the case, you definitely want to use the redsn0w jailbreak. Its a bootrom exploit (harder for apple to break) so it requires a bit of finger work on your part. More on that later. If you have never jailbroken your device, you are free to use any one of the popular jailbreaks, however this guide is only going to cover jailbreaking using redsn0w.

Note to iPad Users: The i OS 4 iPad update is not available on the iPad until sometime this fall.

Required Materials:

    iPhone3G and / or iPod Touch 2g (non-MC version).

To find out if you have an MC Device: Go to Settings > General and scroll down until you see Model. If you do have an MC Device, you should checkout the official redsn0w dev team page for information about a tethered jailbreak option.

(Download links are at the bottom under the FAQ)

iTunes updated to the latest 9.2 version:

    Your iOS 4 Version:

Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 4

Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3GS

Download iOS 4.0 for iPhone 3G

Download iOS 4.0 for iPod Touch 3G

Download iOS 4.0 for iPod Touch 2G

Optional Materials:

Custom Boot Logo – Not essential but way sweet. You’ll need a pretty tiny (under 100K) png file w/ 320 x 480 pixels as the dimensions. If you dont want to make one, download our custom boot screen: bootlogo.png

Once you have everything squared away:

  1. Plug the device into your computer.
  2. Update to 4.0. This is no longer the most recent update thru itunes. download the ipsw and custom restore thru itunes. Hold shift when you click update. Let iTunes download and apply the 4.0 update for you.
  3. Open iTunes Preferences > Devices. Ensure Prevent Devices from Syncing Automatically IS CHECKED.
  4. Close iTunes.
  5. Power off Device.
  6. Open redsn0w and follow screens:

Click for Full Resolution Enlargement

Click Browse and Select the IPSW you downloaded Earlier.

Once you’ve gotten to this screen, its time for that fancy finger work. On the next screen, you will have only a few seconds to perform the commands to enter DFU Mode on the iPhone. Thankfully, these things only have 2 important buttons.

The first step is going to to have you hold down the TOP Button for 3 Seconds (power on the device)

The next step will have you hold down the round HOME Button on the bottom for 30 Seconds

The third step will have you RELEASE the POWER Button, while STILL holding down the HOME button. This will have a 30 second timer, but I’ve never seen it take more than like 10 seconds. Afterwards your device will begin the exploit process.

Let it go through and finish everything. It will handle some business and after a while, your iPod should turn back on. Enjoy your custom boot logo, and notice that you have Cydia installed on the new 4.0 homescreen (Now With Folders and Multitasking).

What’s New in 4.0?

For starters, if you selected the multitasking enabled option, you can now double tab the Home button to bring up the multi tasking switcher.

Folders are created whenever you drag one app on top of another app. (Each folder can hold a max of 12 apps.)

There is also a glossier fancier lock screen and NO MORE Cheese Grater Dock! Thats Progress.

Plus, you can set the wallpaper on your springboard background w/o winterboard now. Go into settings to pick your own wallpaper.

Here is a link to the wallpaper shown in our photos. lipsmobile.png

Also, if you go into Cydia > Manage > Sources … Click the Edit button, then the add button, type cydia.hackulo.us and add the new AppSync 4.0 and Installous software repository from the amazing folks at hackulo.us. Dont forget to actually install the Installous app after you’ve added the repository.

Now What?

Themes are working now. We just submitted our 4.0 Theme called ColorGrunge. Hopefully, if its approved, you’ll be able to download it soon.

Themes right now. Pretty much every 3.* theme is going to have to be updated. Don’t believe me? Download winterboard and try some out. Everything looks all weird. Believe that people are working feverishly on updating things tho. Myself included :)

If you have found anything else really f*cked up or basically just not working at all, email johnnyfortune@inmomentmedia.com and ill add your name and findings to the list.

Thanks for Reading,

Johnny

Hack the Black Wii

Posted by johnny on Friday Jul 2, 2010 Under Tutorials

A few years ago I had seen my old roomate hack a Nintendo Wii. He hardware modded the thing, with a modchip installed physically inside the wii. That small, warranty voiding modification, allowed you to play unsigned burned games. It was cool, except you still needed a dual layer burner and blank dual layer discs for some games.

Fast forward a few years, my new redheaded roomie showed up with a brand new Black Nintendo Wii, fresh from the store. After a brief search on Google, I was informed that homebrew could be achieved via software modifications, provided you had an SD card.

I also found out that the Wii can be modified to run games from an External USB Drive, provided you have the proper software on your computer.

As if all that wasnt enough, once you’re done, the custom Homebrew Channel that will be installed on your wii allows you to download games other homebrew users have developed, all open sourcy. Yes, free new crazy homebrewed games! If you’re the artistic type, after this lengthy tutorial, you can also download the wii dev kit and make your very own wii games.

All without opening up the wii or buying one spendy dual layer disc.

If you’re familiar with iDevice jailbreaking, Wii homebrew is basically Cydia. And the Bannerbomb wii exploit was actually written by the same guy who wrote the iPad Spirit Jailbreak. Small world huh?

BTW: This tutorial applies to versions of the Wii System Menu ranging from 3.0 to 4.2.

Required materials:

- Learn Your Wii’s Version!

Go to your wii settings menu and you should see the number in the Top right hand corner. Depending on your Wii’s number, the unlocking process will be different. This Wii is fresh from a store in the Midwest, and came preinstalled with 4.2. Chances are, if you have bought a Wii recently, you’re going to have 4.2. (I believe it or (4.1) came out in sept 2009). All versions can be unlocked, its up to you to figure out what way to go about it.

- SD CARD

Most guides will tell you to use a 2 gig card or less. Although, reportedly, the new Wii’s can handle over a 2gig SD card, but its really not that important. We are only using this to unlock the wii, not load games from it. Personally, I used a 2gig card that cost like pennies at the store. They are practically giving those things away these days.

- USB Hard Drive

This can be any size. Keep in mind that Wii games average about 4 Gigs a piece, so if you planning on collecting a few, you’ll want something decent size. Also, to really test things out, I used an enclosure and an old IDE 200 gig 3.5 inch desktop computer harddrive. Still worked perfect. So, pretty much any form of USB hard drive you can come up with should work.

(ALSO format it to Fat32, more on that later)

- Software

HackMii Homebrew Installer : Download this from http://bootmii.org/download/

BannerBomb: http://bannerbomb.qoid.us/ (make sure you get the right version for your wii)

USB Loader Software: http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/WeHackWii-Package (You’ll want to unzip this to the root of your SD Card after you’ve performed the exploit)

Both of these are zip files. Both of these need to go on your SD Card. But for now, just unpack both of them somewhere you’ll remember.

Let’s Get Dangerous:

First up, you’ll need to exploit you Wii. You may have heard about hacks involving the Twilight Princess disk, and some crazy saved games, but things have moved waay past that. http://wiibrew.org was a huge help with this step. Which, is why I would advice you to click this link (It opens in a new Window) http://wiibrew.org/wiki/Homebrew_setup and follow their Instructions.

For the purpose of this guide, I would advise you to skip part 4 of step 4. Specifically, the part where it says to install DIVX.

Part 4: Installing the Homebrew Channel
4. Go to Install DVDx > Install DVDx and select yes. (What is DVDx?)

The reason being, we will install the DVD player add-on later, thru a newer, cleaner method. :)

When you’re finished hacking, (it will prolly take around a 30 minutes) come back with your now Exploited Wii, and we will go over how to play games from a USB.

Loading from a USB:

This is obviously one of the biggest advantages of getting homebrew installed on your wii. This is also where I ran into a lot of problems, finding alot of old information. Even Lifehacker’s guide seemed to be way out of date. That is until I found this awesome site, We Hack Wii With their Wii software package and amazing instructions, getting your Wii to load games from a USB Hard Drive couldnt be easier.

Pre-install Notes:

Before you head to http://wehackwii.pbworks.com/USB-Loader there are a few things to consider. If you have never hacked a Nintendo Wii before, prepared to be bombarded by alot of technical jargon. these guys defiantly know their shit. Thankfully, you dont have to know a whole lot to apply their methods.

if youve been following this guide, you will already be on step 5 of their tutorial.

However, on THEIR step one, they had you download and unzip a few files to the Root of your SD Card. Before you continue with their tutorial, you’ll need to unzip these files to the root of your SD card. You will be overwriting some files. Specifically, Apps and WAD. You will want to do this.

The We Hack Wii tutorial is no joke, and will probably take you atleast a half hour. Maybe more if your the kind to stand around and mull over what you’re doing. Again, if you have been following this guide, you have gone thru their Steps 1-4 Already!

For their Step Five, follow it exactly as written. Follow the DOP-Mii instructions.

Step Six: If you’ve just purchased your Wii, you’ll need to do this step. Even still, its not that hard. Makes for a better install.

Step Seven: Remember how you do this step. you’ll need to repeat it, only slightly different to get your DVD working.

Step Eight: This is their last step, but if you want a DVD player, you’ll need one more step.

DVD PLAYER ENABLING (W/O DIVX):

Open the HomeBrew Channel and run the cIOS222 v4 Installer. Just like in step Seven. Only this time:

  1. Select 249 IOS for Install.
  2. Install Custom IOS 202 (Homebrew)
  3. Use IOS 38 Merged with 60

After that, you’ll be able to play burned dvds.

USB LOADER GX

So if you have been following directions and installed the We Hack Wii Package, you’ll have the newest USB Loader GX Homebrew app. This will allow you to plug in external Hard drives to play backed up copies of your *legit* games. However, before you get to excited, You will need:

USB Hard Drive

I Used an old IDE w/ an External Enclosure, so it doesnt need to be anything fancy. You are going to want to format this to FAT 32. If you are unfamiliar with Formating a Drive, this is a great time to learn.

MAC: Utilities > Disk Utility is the built in Disk Editor. Open it up, format to FAT w/ a Master Boot Record.

UBUNTU LINUX: Administrator > Disk Utility.  Open it up, format to FAT w/ a Master Boot Record

WINDOWS: Off the top of my head, idk. but there are prolly no less than 1000 ways to accomplish this task. really. pick any one.

Software for your Particular OS

Just having a FAT 32 Harddrive isnt Enough!! You will need special software to handle the Wii’s fancy Hard Drive Setting. (Called WBFS File System). This software will allow you to move ISO’s from your computer, to the connected hardrive, in a way that the Wii USB Loader GX program will be able to understand. This is also the most basic way of getting new games onto your wii later. In our current living arrangement, there wasn’t a Windows computer to be found, However, from what I’ve read, Windows Users have the easiest, best options for WBFS management. However, I can attest to the awesomeness of a certain Ubuntu Linux program Wiithon.

UBUNTU Linux: There is a WBFS command line tool and GUI for the command line. If you’re using linux, you’re probably way more capable than I was. I had trouble getting my roomies 10.04 Lucid box to do anything with either of those tools. I thought I was defeated, embarrassed and shamed,  until I found this program: Wiithon. This little baby is sweeeet! It installs thru a .deb file (no command line involved!). After you have Downloaded and Installed Wiithon, you’re ready:

STEP ONE: Connect the USB FAT 32 FORMATTED HARD DRIVE.

STEP TWO: Open Wiithon (it is in Applications > Games by default)

STEP THREE: Click the Preferences Button (Screwdriver) > Tools and Utilities >  Format WBFS

Find your attached hard drive and format it. Now that you have a properly formated Hardrive, any Wii formated ISO you have can be restored to the harddrive. Simply click the new button, find the iso, and watch the progress bar! When it gets all done:

Once you’ve restored a game to the harddrive, all that’s left to do is plug it into the Wii.

Mac: I have not had alot of luck trying to find a current Mac WBFS manager. If anyone has a better solution, email johnny@inmomentmedia.com and I will surely credit you! For now, I guess I recommend using WBFS Manager via VM Ware.

Windows: WBFS Manager is a great starting point. You’ll need to follow the same basic steps. Format the drive, than restore your ISO files. This is probably the easiest and most famous WBFS Manager, but by no means the only one.

After you’ve restored the game, on whatever Operating System through any software you’ve chosen, its time to plug the hard drive into the wii.

  1. Open Homebrew Channel.
  2. Find and Load: USB LOADER GX.
  3. Select your game, and Play All Day.

Recap: your Nintendo Wii should now…

  • have an external Hardrive, capable of playing backup games. Your computer has the software to install the backedup copies.
  • Be able to play DVDs. Burned or Otherwise.
  • Load up the Homebrew Channel, giving you access to untold treasures. (stay tuned for further posts on cool homebrew apps)
  • shine

Hopefully you found this tutorial helpful!

Beginners Guide: iPhone Themes

Posted by johnny on Monday Jun 14, 2010 Under Tutorials

THIS POST IS OUTDATED. This is only applicable for 3.1.3 or under. If you would like to learn how to create an iOS 4 Theme, please see our updated post here: http://inmomentmedia.com/blog/?p=195

Ever Wanted you’re own iPhone or iTouch Theme?

Its Easy! Read on to Learn How.

Having just created an iphone 3.0 theme, and getting it in a Cydia repository, freely available to the hacker public, I figured Id write down a few notes on the process.

First off, you have to create a theme obviously. Now, you could start by SSHing your ipod and navigating to /private/var/stash/themes and copy one of the themes to your hardrive. Alternatively, you could download our Starter Kit:

Besides needing those files, you’ll need some sort of image editing software. Photoshop is the obvious high end choice, but its by no means required. Almost anything can save a .png file with a transparency.

Important things to Remember:

The iPhone has a screen resolution of 320 pixels wide by 480 pixels tall.

All the application icons need to be no larger than 60 x 60 pixels square.

iPads have a much higher resolution, and even a different DPI than normal computers. Developing a quality theme for an iPad can be tricky because of this.

the Theme Directory on your device is /private/var/stash/themes

Now that the numbers have been covered, and you’ve downloaded the sample it’s time to get busy. Inside the starter pack, you’ll find the following files:

StarterKit.theme

This is a theme file. What you’re trying to create (given that you’re reading this guide). Basically, to create this file, you just rename a folder with the .theme extension. In this example I’ve renamed the StarterKit folder StarterKit.theme. However, doing this stops it from functioning as a normal folder. In Mac OSX if you want to view whats in a theme file, you’ll need to right click and go to “Show Package Contents” in the menu. This will allow you to view and manipulate the files in the folder, or remove them, for easier fixing.

If you were to right click/Show Contents the provided StarterKit.theme file, you would see that inside it is the exact same files that are in the regular StarterKit folder that is also provided.

In That folder, you’ll find the following Files:

Dock.png

This is the dock image. In our example, its an empty .png, givng the theme a transparent dock. You can replace it with whatever image you want. Some examples you might try just to get started could be replacing it with an image like one of these free vector headers.

http://www.vecteezy.com/web-elements/11-Free-Vector-Glass-Header-Designs—Fancy

Images (Folder)

Inside this folder are the basic images for the mandatory apps, like video and itunes, along with weather and calculator etc. For other apps, like Rock or Cydia, you would just save a 60 x 60 png icon names either Rock.png or Cydia.png in that folder. Make sure the first letter is capitalized.

Info.plist

This is a property list file, which means it uses a Key | Value layout to control certain aspects of your device. On Mac OSX it will open with the default system property list editor. On Windows, you’ll need a text editor or notepad. On Mac I also suggest using a text editor like BBEdit or even TextEdit. Here is a printout of the file.

<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?>
<!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd">
<plist version="1.0"><dict>
<key>DockedIconLabelStyle</key>
<string>color: transparent</string>
<key>UndockedIconLabelStyle</key>
<string>color: transparent</string>
</dict></plist>
<?xml version="1.0" encoding="UTF-8"?><!DOCTYPE plist PUBLIC "-//Apple Computer//DTD PLIST 1.0//EN" "http://www.apple.com/DTDs/PropertyList-1.0.dtd"><plist version="1.0"><dict>
<key>DockedIconLabelStyle</key><string>color: transparent</string><key>UndockedIconLabelStyle</key><string>color: transparent</string>
</dict></plist>

Ive went ahead and Bolded and Underlined whats important. the Key in the first instance is the Docked Icons Labels, and the second Key corresponds to the Undock Icon Labels. Using both of these Keys, we can then affect every icon on the springboard. If you want to change the font underneath your icons, either Docked or Undock, or change just the color of the labels, this is how you do it.

In our example, I’ve chosen to remove the labels. This may seem familiar to some, as both are options in winterboard, I created a new plist filed and inserted both Key String Pairs.

LockBackground.png

This file is a no brainer. Its the lock screen background. Remember, these files are 320 pixels wide by 480 pixels tall png files.

Wallpaper.png

Another No brainer. This is the wallpaper for the springboard.

What’s Next?

Well, provided you’ve created a custom lock screen, a custom wallpaper, and tweaked the icons to you’re liking, it’s time to test this theme out.

Next, you’ll need to change the name of your file. Right now you should have a main folder, something like ThemeName, or StarterKit. Select the folder and change its name. (In Mac select the folder and hit return, in Windows, right click and rename.) What you need to do is add .theme to the end of the name, giving you, ThemeName.theme or StarterKit.theme. In Mac, the folder icon will change to a theme icon, if performed successfully.

Next, you’ll need to transfer the .theme package from your computer to your device, thru SSH. In this example, I will be using CyberDuck.

This is going to require you to SSH Connect with your iTouch or iPhone. for many of you, this will be very familiar, as you’ve probably done this to install an NES rom (which im sure you obtained legally) or maybe installed some ebook file. If so, fire up whatever program you use, make a connection, and navigate to /private/var/stash/themes directory. There is also a shortcut to the themes folder in “”. I have tried putting files in both, and have noticed no difference. I have seen guides claiming to only use private/var/stash/themes as thats where the themes are really kept, but either way you should be ok.

If you have never SSH’d onto your iTouch or iPad or iPhone its high time you get on that. This tutorial isnt about that, and I dont have one already written, so until I do, you’ll have to google for SSH iPhone tutorial. Hint: For Mac OSX users, download Cyberduck.

Once cyberduck is installed, you can click the Bonjour Button and your device should show up in list (provided its on the same network as your Cyber Duck computer). Click your device, and type in “root” for the username and the default password “alpine” (Unless you’ve changed your default password, like during the setup of Rock.app, then use your new pw)

After you’ve gotten the ThemeName.theme file you’ve been working so hard on uploaded to the device, its time to really test it. For that, open winterboard, and if you’ve done everything correctly, your theme should be listed. To make your life Easier, before you turn your theme on and respring, DESELECT everything else in winterboard first. This will give you a clear understanding of everything your theme is touching.

There’s got to be more than that?

Oh yes. Alot more. Notably there is also the UIImages Folder and the Bundles Folder that ARE NOT INCLUDED in the StarterKit file I’ve provided. These images are what control things like the lock screen slider, the safari navigation bars, the signal bars, bluetooth logo and every image you see that isnt an App Icon, wallpaper, or the Dock.

However, for this reason, doing a tutorial about every file that could be in those folders would take Forevah, cause there is alot. The screenshot on the left is an example of what a UIImages folder starts to look like if you decide you want to change EVERY little thing about your iPod. There is also a UIAudio folder for the click and tock, or rather on and off sounds you might also want to tinker with.

In which case, those audio files are .CAF (Core Audio Files) and I had to use Soundbooth to edit them on MacOSX.

If you see a theme that changes something, you can always drag it from your device onto your desktop, “Show Package Contents” and see what files they have changed to achieve the desired effect.

Obviously just copying someone elses files and trying to make a theme out of it isnt going to work. At least not if your goal is to get it hosted in a legit repository. But the technique is invaluable for learning what image needs to be changed, and how big it is.

What about getting into Cydia?

So after you’ve created this super cool theme, you might want to share it with the world. The easiest and best way to do that, would be to upload a zipped copy of your .theme file (so it would look like StarterKit.theme.zip) to a hosting website. What hosting websites? Well that is entirely up to you. However the bigger ones are more strict with what they allow. Anytime you’ve looked at a package in cydia, you’ve seen the logos for the main websites, and their web addresses can also be found in Rock or Cydia under sources.

For my theme, I created an account at http://www.iphonemodding.com and had a very positive experience doing so. If you plan on charging for your theme, it HAS to be 100% original content, and you’ll need to upload it to somewhere like http://www.modmyi.com who allow you to charge $$$ for your themes.

New Theme Posted!

Posted by johnny on Thursday Jun 10, 2010 Under Uncategorized

Rainbow Black DJ

Our First iPhone / iTouch / iPad theme

you can now download the theme via Cydia or Rock, for Free!

Checkout the new skin. The first of hopefully a few more. This one is a full custom theme, usable on iPod Touch, iPhone, and iPads. The theme even adds custom DJ skratch sound effects. If you’re interested in making your own theme, see our next post for full instructions.

Installing this theme is the same as any other, simply open up Cydia or Rock and search for:

Rainbow Black

or look in the Themes (Complete) section, and install the theme.

A few install notes:

You must have a jailbroken device. If you do not, please see our tutorial for how to accomplish this very simple task.

The theme is currently hosted on  http://www.iphonemodding.com and you must have their repository installed or its not going to show up in your search.

(Their repository should be on your device by default. If not, you’ll need to go into the section labeled “Repositories” in Cydia and add apt.iphonemodding.com repository from the list. This is how you get other websites packages, (who not natively included when you install)  to show up in cydia.)

In winterboard, before you activate the theme, I advise you to DE-SELECT EVERYTHING IN WINTERBOARD FIRST. The theme already has overrides to remove icon labels and change the background and lock screen. Also, the custom wallpaper option on iPads doesn’t work, b/c iPads can already have a custom wallpaper. So, with that covered, everything is good to go, pretty much…

If you’re really paying attention, you’ll notice the pictures have 5 row springboard and docks. How is that possible? You’ll need two more additional packages, also available in both Cydia and Rock. They are:

Five-Column SpringBoard

Five Icon Dock

Search for each respectively install both packages to complete your theme. Also, do not install either of those if you have an ipad. It will mess yo shit up.

Enjoy!

Custom iPad / iPod Setup

This is no longer the most current tutorial. For iTunes 9.2 and iOS 4 please use this tutorial: http://inmomentmedia.com/blog/?p=161

Hello. This is a fairly short and simple tutorial. It has been tested and works for  iPad 3.2 OS and iPhone/iPod 3.1.3 OS. As of May 21st 2010 these are the latest versions for both devices.

There are screen shots from both iPod and iPad devices through out the tutorial. Basically this is how to go from an out of the box iPad or iPod to a fully advantageous device in a couple of minutes. After this tutorial you will be able to install just about any app or custom tweak out there. Everything from custom icons to metasploit will now be accessible.

This is just how I setup my iPad and iPod. Other tutorials may vary. Hopefully I do a good job of explaining things…

Step 1:  Jail Break

This is a very simple and short process, Thanks entirely to the amazing people that make these exploits possible.

Head over to http://spiritjb.com/ and download the latest jailbreak installer for your operating system. The jailbreak takes all of about one minute on a decent machine. Im not going to post a screen shot cause its one button. Just click the button. This works on Windows or Mac. And is the only point in the whole tutorial where another computer is required. After this, everything is done on the device itself.

Step 2: Cydia

Ok, without going into the technical exploitation of what just went on when you clicked the one button, the important thing to know is that Cydia will now be installed on your device. One new app is now on your home screen. Probably doesnt seem like that big of a deal, you’ve got plenty of apps right? Wrong. This is a super powerful app capable of manipulating just about every bit of data on your device, even the naughty bits.

See Photo…

Naughty Bits

Step 2 (part 2): optional Rock

This part of step two is optional. However, I recommend it. On the iPod/iPhone this step is a must.

Rock is an alternative to cydia. I have had a lot of really good experiences with it, and its A LOT faster on the iPod than Cydia is. To install, simply open up cydia. It will then go through it’s intial updates blah blah blah, when that’s done, hit search on the bottom navigation bar.

Search for: rock

Scroll down until you find “Rock App” and click it. Then hit install.

Step 3: Repository how to.

So now on your main screen, you will have cydia installed, (and Rock will also be there, if you did the optional install)

However, we are just getting started. Your device is still only half complete. The next thing is installing like, the must have app, the legendary, Installous. If you haven’t heard of this app, where have you been?! Its pretty much the best thing evah. Basically, it simplified way of searching appscene and 4shared and media fire for uploaded unsigned ipa files. ( .ipa is to ipod/ipad as .exe is to windows or .dmg is to osx ).

So how do you get it? And once I have it, How do you use it?

The first step, getting the app is the trickiest part. However, pay close attention and after this step, its all downhill, and your device is pretty much set for life. And honestly, this step is really not that hard.

First things first. Open up either Rock or Cydia. Let them go through their initial stuff. Next, click Manage on the bottom nav bar. We are going to add a custom repository, basically a specially written website your device will now consider when searching for packages to install. Not important to know more than this.

Click Manage Sources. Then Edit in the top Right. Then Add in the Top Left. Now you need to enter the repository address, in this case: http://cydia.hackulo.us

Click Add Source to finalize things. Great. That was the most difficult part.

If you are still confused, Please checkout the photos.

Step 4: Installous

So to harvest the fruits of your labor, In Rock or Cydia, click the search tab (right next to manage) and search for the word install. Scroll down to the i section and select Installous. Install this package.

Note: Installing this app this way will also install AppSync for your device. This enables you to download app ipa file’s to your computer, install them into iTunes, and sync them onto your device via iTunes. It also installs a few other important packages. This app is very popular and you may experience download problems when trying to install. The last device I installed this on took me clicking install 3 times before it began the download.

There are alot of people trying to access the same file. Your not paying for it anyways, so just be patient and keep at it.

Also. once the Hackulo.us repo is installed, a new folder will appear in the list of categories, called hackulo.us. Inside is a list of all the files available from that repository. They also make a swell antivirus app and you can manually install appsync among other things. worth checking out later.

Step 5: Now I do what with this?

Close out of whatever app you’re using, and on the spring board (home screen), probably on the second page, you’ll find a new icon, a big green box with an arrow. Click That.

This app is similar to the app store, or cydia. Im just going to post a few screenshots of how you install an app from within the program, in this case I am installing a popular music game.

The part that gives people the most trouble is how you actually download something.Basically, the problem comes, once you’ve found what you’re looking for, its time to pass the “Turing test” with a Captcha question, or waiting out a timer.

Just like rock or cydia, click the green download button. In the top right corner. On the iPad this will pop a small box. Don’t LOOSE the box, or click anywhere outside the box. On the iPod, it will take you to the contents of what would be the iPad box. Basically, this is a list of the available versions, who cracked them, and where they are currently sitting. Typically you want the latest version, and I try and pay special attention to where I am downloading from.

installous on the ipod

click download. saves to downloads

iPad Version.

clicking outside the box = starting process over

AppScene has Captcha. Its really annoying, but this is by far the most common.

Media Fire is amazing. No captcha or timer.

4Shared has a 45 second timer before you can download.

RapidShare has a similar timer.

There are a lot of other download sites, all doing the same thing, all with their own, are you human, hey checkout these sweet ads bullshit. Alternativly, you could just pay for a premium membership ($3.00 ish) from AppScene and avoid a lot of headaches with captcha and timers.

After your cleared to download, its going to take you two buttons. Its safer to click the download and install it yourself, or you can click install and roll the bones.  In any case. It will download and install and then appear on your spring board.

If you’re having problems with Apps not appearing on the springboard, (and this has really only been an iPad problem for me) I recommend going into cydia, finding the installous package, and click remove. after that restart your device, and reinstall installous. As long as you dont remove the repository, it will still show up in the search.

Step 6: Pimp yo shit dawg.

So, if you’re lucky enough to have an iPad, you’ll be able to automatically set your photos as your springboard background. However, iPods and iPhones aren’t natively capable of this. So to change your background, your dock and a whole bunch of other cool options, your going to need one more thing, Winterboard.

Note to iPad Users: Winterboard still offers a bunch of neat stuff, like the ability to remove icon labels, custom lock screens and the ability to change your icons. Just dont select the custom wallpaper option, or you’ll loose the built in image scaling.

Open up Rock or Cydia, click search, and look for winterboard. Install this and it will have you do a soft restart. Afterwards there will be a new blue icon with a little white snowflake on your springboard.

Winterboard Customizer

Open this to enable a few things right away, like on the iPod, home wall paper.I also like to search in Cydia and get the 5 column springboard and dock, for the ipod only right now.

Infiniboard is something else that’s worth searching google or cydia for more info. Its available for both, and allows you to put more icons on each page.

The order (from top to bottom) of the customization in the winterboard arrangement signifies its priority in the grand scheme of things. Also, search for rainbow to get the custom signal bar’s on both the iPod and iPad in the photos.

Well, after that its all about your preferences, keep searching cydia for various themes, and select them in winterboard to enable them. I wouldnt recommend going to crazy with your iPad. However if you’ve installed Rock, create a Rock Id and it will backup all the packages you’ve installed online, so if you have to restore, setting your device backup is as easy as syncing your bookmarks.

On your iPod or iPad navigate to http://www.inmomentmedia.com/mobile and you can download the wallpaper from the tutorials, among others i’ve made.

peace,
